Press Release
SAN JOSE, May 2, 2016 — After over 80 years of quality reporting, San Jose State’s Spartan Daily newspaper has become officially digitized. There were many challenges to make more than 77,000 pages into digital format, but it has finally become a reality.
“The history revealed by looking back at previous issues of the Spartan Daily is multifaceted,” said journalism lecturer and design adviser Tim Mitchell. “You can view the perspective of student journalists writing and photographing for the record following ethical professional practices with photojournalism and AP (Associated Press) writing style.”

The project involved a two-step process of computer processing of existing analog material to make page images keyword searchable and by reviewing, cataloging and uploading of the files. The resulting PDFs can be viewed like printed pages and keywords can be used to search the whole archive, issues and pages.

Mitchell acknowledged the The Jack and Emma Anderson Endowment Fund, which is dedicated equipment and technology upgrades to SJSU’s School of Journalism & Mass Communications.

“If the Andersons were still alive, I think they would be feeling fulfilled that we were preserving the newspaper for the world to see,” said Mitchell.

From the Spartan Daily newspaper have come six Pulitzer Prize winners, four of them since 2000, as graduates of SJSU’s School of Journalism & Mass Communications. The newspaper continues to win awards and is the oldest “daily” college newspaper in the California State University system.
