Online News Source: San Jose Mercury News
On Feb. 4th a knife was found buried on the property of former NFL player and current felon OJ Simpson. The article on The Mercury News was reporting details on the Los Angeles Police Department confirming they were examining the knife reportedly found at the Los Angeles-area property. The relevance of this finding comes during same time as the show featuring his case is on television. The online coverage did a good job catching the reader up on the history of the case for people who did not know, and also discussed more the more recent finding and fine details. The online article had 585 words after cutting and pasting into a work document and checking word count. There a few sources cited in the article. It was TMZ as well as LAPD Capt. Andy Neiman. The article is much more like print coverage, then broadcast because they are pretty much the same style although one is printed and the other is online. The headline draws in the reader because it mentions the knife, and OJ Simpson’s estate which will draw in most individuals because of the past drama and coverage of the trial. The lead is very “Newsy” and just tells the point of the story right away. There were no images or videos with the story, but it had a lot of text as well as a chat box for readers to share their opinions.

Television/ Broadcast Media: WCVB 5 ABC: Boston’s News Leader:
The story updates the viewer on the situation involving the knife found of the former property of former NFL and felon OJ Simpson. This story would be relevant as is, but comes on the heels of the show about the trial being aired on television. The two minute story features only one source being quoted and that is the police chief of the LAPD during his official statement. The broadcast used footage of the statement. On television, it seemed as if only the bigger points of the story and breaking news were told, while print painted much more of a picture of the scene and background. The headline graphic and voice over showed footage of OJ in a court trial with the broadcaster introducing the news. While they didn’t have a teaser for the upcoming story, but there was an announcement before the actual story news lead which was the breaking news about the knife. The broadcast began with images of the scene for about 15-20 seconds before an anchor was shown on camera.

National Public Radio/ Broadcast Audio   All Things Considered - LAPD Investigate Knife Found On Former Property of O.J. Simpson

Once again, this story in the radio involves the breaking news of a knife being found buried on the former property of felon and past NFL running back Orenthal James Simpson. The story is a little over two minutes and discusses some viewpoints of this situation. The narrator cited multiple different sources in the small period of time, giving an overall standpoint of where the event is currently.  The coverage on the radio is much more lyrically expressive and detailed because there are no graphics or other types of media to help inform and backup the information given. Radio coverage is different than print or television in the way that the anchors are much more enthusiastic and speak with a little bit more of an opinionated tone. They do use interviews from the sources cited to at least provide a different voice and keep the viewers hooked. The headline and lead take a shock approach to catch the listener in early and keep them entertained.
